What is SEO?

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) refers to efforts to increase web traffic from search engines without paying a search engine for listings or rankings. Sometimes this is referred to as "organic" SEO or getting "natural" results.

These effort types can include:

  • Altering a sites information architecture and text content to make it more relevant for chosen search terms.
  • Creating pages specifically geared to increase rankings for a specific terms
  • Creating relevant links on other sites to drive traffic and increase perceived relevance/importance by the search engine

What is SEM?

The term Search Engine Marketing (SEM) is typically used to describe paying search engines directly for services to increase traffic.

These services can include:

  • Paid placement: This is paying to appear as a "sponsored link" alongside search results. Typically you commit to paying a cost-per-click, via a bidding process, to appear on search results pages for a specific term.
  • Contextual advertising: Here your ad will appear on various pages across the internet where a page relates to the subject you are advertising
  • Paid inclusion: This usually means paying to appear in an engine's main search rankings. This can be billed on a pay-per-click or subscription basis.

What are Web Analytics and Metrics?

Web Analytics is the measurments, analysis and reporting of traffic and behavior on the internet. It can refer to traffic on your site alone or for the web as a whole (typically in regards to your industry or market sector).

The term Web Metrics is often using interchangeably with Web Analytics but refers more specifically to the analysis of user paths as well as the analysis, attempts to adjust, optimize or leverage this data to increase conversions or ease of use.

The tools used for managing and analyzing this data, known as Web Analytics or Metrics tools, are often inexpensive or free but it can take time to master the tools and properly interpret, and act on, the results.
